Warren Zevon's storytelling and songwriting is in a league of its own. The Chicago-born singer and wordsmith spent the early '70s taking gradual steps towards the spotlight with a string of low-key successes that included a stint working as a touring pianist for The Everley Brothers. A temporary move to Sitges on the Costa Brava in 1974 sparked the creation of "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner." One of his signature hits alongside 1978's "Werewolves of London, – which featured Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on drums and bass respectively – and "Lawyers, Guns and Money", the tale revolves around a fictional Norwegian man named Roland and is located during the Nigerian Civil War and Congo crisis of the 1960s. Warren Zevon wrote the soft-rock tune with David Lindell, who had formerly worked as a mercenary in Africa and was now running a bar in Sitges called the Dubliner. The song was included on Warren Zevon's 1978 album Excitable Boy.
