Uriah Heep are wigging out with the sunrise on this ageless track from the UK prog titans. "Sunrise / And the new day's breaking through / The morning of another day without you / And as the hours roll by / No one's there to see me cry / Except the sunrise / The sunrise and you," begins David Byron, who wrote "Sunrise" with Ken Hensley. The band first introduced this tough rock idyll on their fifth studio album, The Magician's Birthday, which came out in 1972 as the follow-up to their breakthrough album Demons and Wizards. In typical Uriah Heep fashion, the track quickly descends into a mind-bending existential trip, with central protagonist waxing lyrical about the 'sunrise' 'catching his soul' and 'making him whole again' over a backdrop of gnarly, distorted guitar from Mick Box. One of Uriah Heep's tried and tested live staples, "Sunrise" enjoyed its best moments on stage in 1972 and 1973, and opened the band's first-ever live album, Uriah Heep Live, in 1973.
