London's long-haired prog wizards Uriah Heep opened their very first album …Very 'Eavy …Very 'Umble, released in 1970, with this slow-burning figment of their imagination. On the single version of the creeping heavy metal song, which lasts more than three minutes less than the album track, chugging guitar keeps the fantasy afloat: "I was only seventeen / I fell in love with a gypsy queen / She told me, hold on! / Her father was the leading man / You're not welcome on our land / And then as a foe, he told me to go". In swapping metal's trademark electric guitar solo organ solo for hair-raising organ, the British five-piece blazed a trail with the chorus-less "Gypsy", which was written by the band's Mick Box – who also provides high-octane guitar – and David Byron, and boasted spine-tingling multi-part harmonies.
