Released in April 1976, the hard rock classic "The Boys Are Back in Town" was Thin Lizzy's first big hit outside of their native Ireland. It was the lead single from their sixth album Jailbreak (1976), which proved to be their commercial breakthrough across the Atlantic. Written by singer Phil Lynott and produced by John Alcock, "The Boys Are Back in Town" is said to be inspired by the Quality Street Gang, a criminal group that operated in the Manchester area in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Shortly after its commercial release, the track peaked at Number 8 on the Official UK Singles Chart and entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at Number 12. Jailbreak, its parent album, went to Number 10 in the UK, Number 18 in the United States, and Number 5 in Canada.
