Legendary Irish rock band Thin Lizzy built a career out of their whiskey-soaked melodic hard rock, and Chinatown—the second track from the group’s 1980 album of the same name—is a great example of that. Like much of the album, the song serves as an introduction to new guitarist Snowy White, who would replace Gary Moore. Chinatown features the kinetic drumming of Brian Downey as well as impressive guitar acrobatics by White and Scott Gorham. Chinatown was a group effort, written by Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Phil Lynott, and Snowy White. The song features lyrics warning of the dangers of Chinatown, employing tropes of 1940s gangster songs. The track was produced by Thin Lizzy and Kit Woolven, and released as the first single from the group’s tenth album (with a live performance of Sugar Blues as its B-side). Chinatown would go on to hit Number 12 on the Irish Singles chart, as well as Number 21 on the UK Singles chart.
