Even though not as well-known as some of their contemporaries, the LA-based soul group The Whispers had one of the most inspiring success stories in the genre, scoring several Top 10 hits across three decades of music. Almost 15 years into their career, The Whispers finally landed their first Number 1 record with their 1979 ninth eponymous album, which hit the top of the US R&B charts thanks to the popularity of hit singles like "And the Beat Goes On" and "Lady." The LP also included the track "A Song for Donny," a heartfelt tribute to legendary soul singer Donny Hathaway, who had passed away earlier that year. Its lyrics were written by labelmate Carrie Lucas and the instrumentation belongs to the Donny Hathaway classic "This Christmas." Released as the album's lead single, "A Song for Donny" came out on February 4, 1979, and peaked at Number 21 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (formerly known as the Hot Soul Singles chart).
