Theodore DeReese Pendergrass, better known to the world by his stage name Teddy Pendergrass, was an American R&B/soul singer known for his soulful voice and sensitive ballads. With the release of his 1978 album Life Is a Song Worth Singing, Teddy Pendergrass became closely associated with what is known as “quiet storm,” a music subgenre and radio format that features smooth, romantic, and impassioned vocals over a quiet musical backing with a jazz influence. It Don’t Hurt Now,” one of the album’s most acclaimed songs, perfectly encapsulates the genre. Its lyrics explore the topic of getting over a broken relationship. It Don’t Hurt Now was written by Sherman Marshall and Ted Wortham. It was produced by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Jack Faith, Gene McFadden, John Whitehead, Victor Carstarphen, and Sherman Marshall. Life Is a Song Worth Singing peaked at Number 11 on the US Billboard 200 chart, as well as Number 1 on the Top Soul LPs chart.
