In 2021, Canadian folk-bluegrass ensemble The Dead South put their distinctive stamp on the ubiqutious song, which was copyrighted and published by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell in 1940, turning the sun-filled gem song into a gothic folk meditation carved from guitar, mandolin, banjo and cello, and a vocal arrangement imbued with haunting harmonies. "You Are My Sunshine" is featured on The Dead South's hilariously titled 2022 EP Easy Listening for Jerks, Pt. 1, which also includes their version of Christian hymn "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."
