The Dead South confront painful subject matter on their ghoulishly titled 2014 track "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company." Opening with a drawn-out whistling intro that soon segues into the first verse, the rootsy song – featured on the band's debut studio album Good Company – sketches out a gut-wrenching tale of domestic violence, murder and death, in which a man kills his wife. "I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee / My squeeze / The stage it smells, tells, hell's bells, miss-spells / Knocks me on my knees / It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt / Hang me on a tree / After I count down, three rounds, in hell I'll be in good company," sing the Juno-award winning folk-bluegrass musical ensemble, who are based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
