This acoustic version of "Boss D.J." shows reggae-inclined ska-punk rabble-rousers Sublime in a softer new light, promoting Brad Nowell's voice to centre stage on a fireside tune that relies purely on acoustic guitar for its flesh and bones. The song appears on Sublime’s second album Robbin' the Hood (1994) and allegedly explores Brad Nowell's issues with substance abuse ("There's a steel train comin' through / I would take it if I could / And I would not lie to you / Because Sunday mornin' soon will come"), among other autobiographical subjects. The original album version also contains partial covers of "Do it Twice" and "Waiting in Vain" by Bob Marley, as well as Aswad's "Roots Rocking". Robbin' the Hood, the more experimental follow-up to Sublime's career-defining 1994 release 40oz to Freedom, played out like a game a who's-who in reggae, rap, and rock, making reference to or sampling the likes of Steady B, Barrington Levy, Geto Boys, The Doors, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Marley, Flavor Flav, Just-Ice, Beastie Boys, and Jack Owens.
