Spanning everything from folk to hard rock, the LP featured artwork by the famous art design group Hipgnosis, who also worked on covers by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and many others. “Queen of Spades” begins life as a serene ballad but tumbles into rockier waters around the halfway mark. Produced and recorded by Styx at Paragon Studios in Chicago with recording engineer Barry Mraz and mixing engineer Rob Kingsland, Pieces of Eight was released at the height of the band's commercial reign (1977-1981), when they released not one, not two, but four multi-platinum records, and also scored two hit singles in "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" and "Renegade."
