"Pieces of Eight" is the title track of the eighth studio album by the rock band Styx. The album is a concept album that singer Dennis De Young says is about not giving up your dreams just for the pursuit of money and material possessions. Styx has sold more than 54 million records. They've released four consecutive multi-platinum albums and sold out tours worldwide but they're not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The band has played all types of rock, from rock ballads, progressive rock, to rock operas, but critics have always hated them. De Young says he thinks Whitney Houston is great but he’s confused as to why so many artists who don’t play rock have gotten in before acts like Styx, Iron Maiden, or Judas Priest. Luckily, their fans have always appreciated their creativity. The title of the song refers to an ancient Spanish coin, a piece of eight.
