"Plowed" was issued as the second single from Sponge's debut studio album Rotting Piñata, released in 1994, and captures the grunge-led sound of the era. The song is one of the Detroit band's most treasured and well-known cuts, carrying them into the post-grunge movement. As well as propelling their debut album into the canon of alternative 1990s gems, "Plowed"—the band's first and highest-charting track to grace the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, where it settled at number 41—is featured on Sponge's compilation albums Molly and Hits & B Sides, Volume One, and was re-recorded for Hits & B Sides, Volume Two and for their 2021 album, Lavatorium. In spite of their predilection for a lineup change, Sponge are still going strong, with founder and frontman Vinnie Dombroski serving as the band's sole constant member, and the group dropping their ninth studio album, Lavatorium, in August 2012.
