Whether doomy, sludge metal-tinged rocker "Over Now" depicts the end of a romantic relationship or the end of Alice in Chains in their contemporaneous grunge mold, it's an emotionally charged song that cuts deep. The band were at a critical point in their career, weighed down by frontman Layne Staley's drug addiction and also had contractual obligations to their label. "Over Now" was the result of that pressure and delivered as the closing track on their 1995 self-titled album. Alice in Chains never did as well as 1992's Dirt, which is viewed as the band's landmark record, but it did make some waves, going to number one on the Billboard 200 where it stayed for 46 weeks. “Over Now” ended up being the last track on the last studio album that Layne Staley recorded before his death from a speedball overdose on April 5th, 2002 at the age of 34.
