On December 11, 1964, R&B legend Sam Cooke was shot dead by the manager of LA's Hacienda Motel, Bertha Franklin. Although the facts of the shooting remain a mystery to this day, his death was ruled a justifiable homicide based on the testimony of Bertha Franklin. First released as a single in 1964, "Shake" was the title track from the first posthumous album by the late musician and civil rights activist, released in 1965, and saw Bobby Womack – whose career had been launched by Sam Cooke - lend a hand on the guitar. The track gave Sam Cooke Top 10 hit in the US, where it reached number seven in February 1965, as well peaking at number two for three weeks on the Cashbox R&B charts. It has also been covered by Otis Redding, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Small Faces, and The Supremes, whose version was included on an album of Sam Cooke covers called We Remember Sam Cooke.
