Although Sam Cooke is known as the King of Soul, he was comfortable singing many styles of music. He started in gospel music in the 50s with the Soul Stirrers, and then topped the charts with soul hits including "You Send Me," "Change is Gonna Come," and "Cupid." The versatile singer recorded "Cry Me a River" for his 1963 album Mr. Soul. The song was originally recorded by British pop singer Julie London. He also covered Frank Sinatra's "All the Way" and Nat King Cole's "For Sentimental Reasons on this album. "Cry Me a River" is probably the only song ever recorded that rhymes "plebeian" with "me and." The clever lyric was written by Arthur Hamilton.
The backing track for "Cry Me a River" is available as an instrumental. Be sure to check out all the other versions of this classic song on Karaoke Version.
