Introducing Rush's 1989 album Presto, "Show Don't Tell" embodies the LP's loose, end-of-an-era energy and mined a funkier, groovier, guitar-laden sound that brought even more complex rhythms into the picture. Making a sonic shift, the group toned down their synths and worked with producer Rupert Hine for the first time. This existential dispatch employs courtroom imagery ("You can twist perceptions / Reality won't budge / You can raise objections / I will be the judge / And the jury"), a killer bass solo by Geddy Lee, and nods to the philosophy of a divisive figure, Russian-born American writer Ayn Rand, with whom the band's Neil Peart was enamoured, particularly favouring her 1938 novella Anthem. "Show Don't Tell" was a commercial success, making it to number one on the US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart – giving Rush their second charting single – and with Presto going to number seven in their native Canada. A new deal with Atlantic Records followed.
