Ian Hunter's Mott the Hoople took a snapshot of the band's adventure-filled 1972 North American Tour with this rock and rollin' travelogue that opens the band's sixth studio album Mott (1973). The autobiographical song tells the tale of a rock and roll artist whose guitar is shipped to Oriole, Kentucky instead of Memphis, Tennessee. "All the Way from Memphis" was a hit on US radio and broke into the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number ten. The single was released in September 1973 with "Ballad Of Mott" on the B-side. Meanwhile, Mott was equally successful, climbing to number seven on the UK Albums Chart and notably becoming the last Mott the Hoople album to include guitarist Mick Ralphs, and the first without organist Verden Allen. Mott served as the follow-up to Mott the Hoople's breakthrough fifth album All the Young Dudes, which is widely considered among the greatest albums of all time.
