New wave luminaries Men at Work formed in Melbourne in 1978 and scored a breakthrough hit with their 1980 country-laced single "Down Under." Their debut album, Business as Usual, came the following year and spent a whole nine weeks at the top of the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart, as well as five weeks at number one in the UK in early 1983. "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive," a clever titular play on a famous gothic novel, opened the band's second album, 1983's Cargo, on which they carried over the success of their debut LP and scored another Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart number one. Embracing the jaunty charm of the previous offerings, the song turns the novel's narrative on its head by drawing a protagonist who becomes cooler rather than scarier when consuming a special concoction. "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive" is also notable for giving Men at Work their last top 40 in all countries except their Australian homeland.
