"Mary, Did You Know?" is one of the most well-known Christmas entries in the American holiday songbook. Though its evocative lyrics were penned by Mark Lowry in 1984, it wasn't until 1991 that composer Buddy Greene set the words to music. The song's theme delves into the relationship between Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her son, exploring the miraculous and the mundane in their bond. It was first recorded by Christian recording artist Michael English, who included it in his self-titled debut solo album later that year. At the time of the song's recording, both English and Mark Lowry were integral parts of the Gaither Vocal Band, while Buddy Greene was accompanying them on tour. In 1993, American country artist Kathy Mattea recorded her rendition of the song as part of her studio album, Good News. While the song wasn't released as a single, Good News reached number 51 on the US country chart and won Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards.
