Born in Harlan, Kentucky, contemporary Christian star Jordan Mackenzie Smith cut his singing teeth in a church choir before rising to fame in 2015 as the winner of season nine of The Voice. That same year, he banked a Hot Christian Songs chart-topper with the solemn ballad "Mary Did You Know," a Christmas letter to Mary, mother of Jesus with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music written by Buddy Greene in 1991. The song—a Christian festive staple, covered by country artist Kathy Mattea on her 1993 album Good News, for which she won the Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album—also reached number 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
