Even though they're best known for their early 1980s, new wave-infused hits "Centerfold" and "Freeze-Frame," The J. Geils Band actually began their career in the late 1960s with a series of boogie-infused blues rock albums that enjoyed moderate success in both the US and Canada. Such is the case of "Give It to Me," the lead single from their 1973 third studio LP, Bloodshot. Released in March 1973 alongside the B-side "Hold Your Loving," "Give It to Me" was written by lead singer and percussionist Peter Wolf and keyboard player Seth Justman, and features production by Bill Szymczyk, who would go on to work on the seminal Eagles albums On the Border and Hotel California. Featuring some of the group's raunchiest lyrics, the song's full version is driven forward by a reggae-inspired beat that fully harnesses the band's instrumental might with organ, guitar, and harmonica solos. Shortly after its release, "Give It to Me" reached Number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 39 on the Canadian charts.
