"No One Will Ever Know" was originally written by Fred Rose and Mel Forre; the former recorded the song with his String Band in 1945 for Columbia Records and in 1957, Hank Williams first put his stamp on the song when it was released as a posthumous single. This lonesome country heartbreaker has been recorded by everyone from Tony Bennett in 1952 and Roy Orbison in 1963 to Texan country artist Gene Watson – known best for his 1975 hit "Love in the Hot Afternoon" – who wraps his dulcet tones around heart-wrenching lines like, "No one will ever know my heart is breaking / Although a million teardrops start to flow / I'll cry myself to sleep and wake up smiling / I'll miss you but no one will ever know," to tragically poignant effect. Gene Watson released his version of "No One Will Ever Know" in 1980, just two years before the release of his chart-topping single, "Fourteen Carat Mind."
