Texan country music star Gene Watson hit the jackpot in 1975 with smash-hit single "Love in the Hot Afternoon" and followed it up in 1981 with chart-topper "Fourteen Carat Mind." By 1989, he had a slew of Top 10 hits and well-received albums under his belt. "Dreams of a Dreamer" is a spirited honky tonk-tinged song carved from a wistful feeling ("Left my dreams in a motel in Atlanta / And I guess I lost my mind along the way"). Sonically, the tune leans into a palette of traditional-sounding country, a preference that had started to take shape again in the late 1980s. "Dreams of a Dreamer" was the second track on Gene Watson's 1989 album for Warner Bros, Back in the Fire, which spawned four charting singles, including the title track and the opening track, "Don't Waste Time On the Blues." Back in the Fire was the follow-up to Gene Watson's 1987 album Honky Tonk Crazy, which was issued via Epic.
