"I took a trip on a train / And I thought about you / I passed a shadowy lane / And I thought about you," begins Frank Sinatra on "I Thought About You." Composed in 1939 by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Johnny Mercer who was moved to write the song following a train trip to Chicago, Frank Sinatra set his creamy pipes to the tune for his Songs for Swingin' Lovers! album in 1956. The LP saw Frank Sinatra shift away from the ballads of Wee Small Hours towards deep swing territory, joined by trusted hotshot arranger and composer Nelson Riddle. The historic album, the tenth LP for Frank Sinatra and his fourth for Capitol Records, pulled off the feat of being the first LP ever to top the UK Albums Chart. Numerous other artists have covered "I Thought About You" over the years, including Bob Berg, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman with Mildred Bailey, Billie Holiday with Bobby Tucker, and many more.
