You may not be surprised to learn that one of the musical Christmas elves behind this snowy power ballad is none other than Mariah Carey, who co-wrote the song with James Horner and Will Jennings for the 2000 movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Taylor Momsen, who played Cindy Lou Who, first performs the song in the film but country dignitary Faith Hill immortalized it on record, pouring her heart and soul into this tinsel-less tale of longing which beautifully captures a different side of the festive period: "Where are you Christmas / Why can't I find you / Why have you gone away / Where is the laughter / You used to bring me / Why can't I hear music play / My world is changing / I'm rearranging / Does that mean Christmas changes too," she asks in the opening verse. "Where Are You Christmas" gave Faith Hill a top 10 hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in 2001 while it has been covered by a number of artists, including Pentatonix for an a cappella version in 2018.
