American rock band Bon Jovi has had a long, long string of hits through the 1980s and up until present day. But the group’s debut studio album, 1984’s Bon Jovi, is home to some of the band’s most underrated and lesser-known compositions. One of these is “Shot Through the Heart,” a driving hard rock song with a glam metal influence that is somewhat unusual for the group’s overall sound. “Shot Through the Heart” was written by frontman Jon Bon Jovi along with songwriter Jack Ponti. It was produced by Tony Bongiovi and Lance Quinn. The song’s lyrics deal with the theme of heartbreak, and how suffering through romantic strife is part of playing the game of love; this is a theme the band would revisit several times throughout their career. More keyboard-driven than much of the band’s later work, “Shot Through the Heart” still features the group’s trademark soloing by Richie Sambora, as well as their penchant for chest-pumping singalong choruses. Bon Jovi would go on to famously re-use the song’s title in the chorus to their 1986 mega-hit “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
