After achieving mainstream success with his fifth studio effort The Stranger in 1977, American singer-songwriter Billy Joel teamed up once again with producer Phil Ramone to start working on the follow-up to his breakthrough album. Named after Manhattan's 52nd Street, which had previously been a hub for the jazz scene in New York City, 52nd Street was recorded between July and August 1978 and was finally released in October of that year. As evident by the title, the album's sound was heavily influenced by jazz and several session musicians were brought in to imbue the record with that distinct jazz flavor. Shortly after its release, 52nd Street shot straight to the top of the Billboard 200, becoming the first chart-topping album in Billy Joel's career thanks to hits like "My Life," "Big Shot," and "Honesty." Even though it wasn't released as a single in the US, the slow-burning romantic ballad "Until the Night" was issued as the album's second single in the United Kingdom, reaching Number 50 on the UK charts. Entirely written by Billy Joel, the track paid homage to soul vocal duo The Righteous Brothers and featured layered instrumentation in the vein of Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" production style.
