Billy Joel bids farewell to the hedonism of the '70s, or at least to his own indulgences of the era, on this wistful piano elegy. But that's not without one last hurrah, in the form of "I've Loved These Days.""We drown our doubts in dry champagne / And soothe our souls with fine cocaine / I don't know why I even care / We'll get so high and get nowhere / We'll have to change our jaded ways / But I've loved these days," he reflects, acknowledging that 'We’re going wrong' and that 'We know it’s all a passing phase.' There was a highly personal inspiration behind the song; Billy Joel had just returned to his native New York from LA and wanted to document the moment. Fourth album Turnstiles (1974) is the product of his cross-country return, a record that opens with Say Goodbye to Hollywood and takes in Big Apple serenade New York State of Mind," which became one of his signature tunes.
