Largely a reflection on the effects of balancing a full-time music career with a long-term relationship, the power ballad "Down in a Hole" was written by Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell for their 1992 album Dirt. At first, Jerry Cantrell deemed the song as "too soft" for the band and was reluctant to play it for the rest of the members. Eventually, the track made its way to the tracklist of Alice in Chain's sophomore effort, which was both the band's highest-selling release and the last one to feature all four original members. Released as the album's fifth single on August 30, 1993, "Down in a Hole" went on to be one of the group's best-known songs and spent 21 consecutive weeks at Number 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. In the years that followed, Alice in Chains delivered a powerful acoustic rendition of the song on their 1996 MTV Unplugged album and re-recorded it with new vocalist William DuVall for the Japanese edition of 2009's Black Gives Way to Blue.
