British hard rock band Whitesnake knew they had a great song in Fool for Your Loving,” but they weren’t convinced they got it right the first time around. The band had first recorded the song for their 1980 album Ready an’ Willing. But by the time the group was recording their eighth studio album Slip of the Tongue in 1989, they had honed their skills as performers as well as adopted a much more clearly defined aesthetic. The song was written by David Coverdale, Bernie Marsden, and Micky Moody. It was inspired by the dissolution of Coverdale’s first marriage. The original 1980 version of the song had a much more blues-influenced sound, as it had been written for legendary blues musician B.B. King. The 1989 re-recording of Fool for Your Loving included more pop-leaning elements. It was produced by Mike Clink and Keith Olsen. The song was a hit for Whitesnake, hitting Number 37 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Number 2 on the Mainstream Rock charts.
