Country legend Waylon Jennings' Honky Tonk Heroes (1973) is often credited with inaugurating the second golden era of honky-tonk music, a style born in the South of the United States and first popularized by the likes of Webb Pierce and Hank Williams in the 1950s. Besides modernizing the genre, the album also helped position Waylon Jennings at the forefront of the "outlaw movement," a group of like-minded artists that operated on the fringes of the decidedly more commercial, Nashville-dominated country music industry. Upon its release, Honky Tonk Heroes reached Number 14 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and received mostly positive reviews from critics.
