The Texas-born singer-songwriter was moved to write the song after seeing a newspaper ad describing Tina Turner as a "good hearted woman loving two-timing men", alluding to Ike Turner. "Good Hearted Woman" formed the title track of Waylon Jennings's Ronny Light-produced 1972 album and soared to number three on the Billboard Hot County Singles chart.
