Written by, co-starring, and directed by the late Adrienne Shelly, the 2007 posthumously-released film Waitress tells the story of Jenna (played by Keri Russell); a waitress and champion pie-maker living in the American South trapped in a toxic marriage. Played by Adrienne Shelly in the film, Dawn is one of Jenna's colleagues at the diner and is keen to spice up her lonely life with some dating app action. "When He Sees Me" soundtracks the scene in which Dawn considers all the thing that could go wrong with the date; "He could be criminal / Some sort of psychopath who escaped from an institution somewhere where they don't have girls / He could have masterminded some way to find me" but ultimately she retains hope in the process that she may find someone "Who likes the way I am". The song was interpreted by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles for her fifth studio album, which also doubled up as the Broadway soundtrack; What's Inside: Songs from Waitress (2015).
