"Hanky Panky" is a song composed by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich from The Raindrops. Written in just 20 minutes, the track was released in 1963 as a B-side to the single "That Boy John." Despite initially failing to enter any national charts, "Hanky Panky" became an underground hit among garage rock bands due to its overly simplistic structure and infectious melody. In fact, American singer-songwriter Tommy James decided to cover the song with his band The Shondells after hearing it for the first time at a live show in South Bend, Indiana. Even though Tommy James and The Shondells' rendition of "Hanky Panky" came out in 1964, it wasn't until 1966 that their urgent take on the song really took off after Tommy James took a re-recorded version to Roulette Records in New York City. With the support of the label, "Hanky Panky" was swiftly re-released and reached Number 1 of the Billboard Hot 100 for two consecutive weeks.
