Between his debut studio album Kiss Land (2013) and his fourth studio LP After Hours (2020), the Weeknd has made his obsession with the seedy underbelly of city living part of his aesthetic. On this second single from 2022 album Dawn FM – which saw the Canadian R&B superstar trace a redemptive narrative arc that ultimately conveys a brighter outlook than his previous efforts - he's battling the freezing temperatures of his Toronto birthplace, "where the winter nights don't ever sleep" and 'the ice inside his veins will never bleed.' It's a striking metaphor, and one which he transfers to the song's overarching theme of tormented love. "Uh, every time you try to fix me / I know you'll never find that missing piece / When you cry and say you miss me / I lie and tell you that I'll never leave, but," he sings in the second verse, questioning his ability to maintain a relationship. "Sacrifice" was written by the Weeknd, Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Carl Nordström and Swedish House Mafia.
