"Friends on the Other Side" is a song from the 2009 Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog. It was written by American composer Randy Newman, who had previously worked with executive producer John Lasseter on the classic Pixar movies Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., and Cars. The track is sung from the point of view of villain Doctor Facilier (played by actor Keith David), a witch doctor who plans to rule New Orleans through the use of voodoo magic. After hearing of Prince Naveen's visit to the city, Doctor Facilier tricks him and his valet Lawrence into a fortune reading in which Naveen is turned into a frog. Just like the rest of the soundtrack, "Friends on the Other Side" was inspired by New Orleans' vibrant musical landscape and has a distinct jazz feel that can be heard during the first part of the song. A reprise of the original track appears toward the end of the film when Doctor Facilier is dragged into the spirit world after failing to repay his debt.
