The opening showstopper of their career-defining 1989 album Doolittle, "Debaser" is one of Pixies' most recognisable tunes, an instantly gratifying slab of elevated alt-rock inspired by a surrealist avant-garde film called Un Chien Andalou ("an Andalusian dog"), cooked up by artist Salvador Dali and director Luis Buñuel in 1929. If that's not enough to chew on, the proto-grunge track, with its clear-cut riff and jangly touches, also inspired Kurt Cobain to write "Smells Like Teen Spirit." On "Debaser," Pixies' frontman Black Francis brings the shock value via the song's most memorable line: “Slicin’ up eyeballs / I want you to know," which references a particularly gruesome scene in Un Chien Andalou. Although not originally released as a single in the '80s, "Debaser" was later released as a single in 1997 to drum up interest in the Death to the Pixies compilation, comprising live, studio and demo versions.
