The Monkees capture that familiar sensation of restlessness on this "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round?", championing Michael Nesmith's country music-rich Texas upbringing via a maelstrom of banjo and bass while leaning on a rock 'n' roll sound that warranted the song's fusion tag. Written by Michael Martin Murphey and Owen Castleman, "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round?" assembled the full band in the studio with background vocals from Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones, while Peter Tork complements Michael Nesmith's guitar-playing. The song was recorded in June 1967 and featured on the album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. – the follow-up to The Monkees' career-defining third LP Headquarters – which employed session musicians and was memorable and history-making for is pioneering uses of The Moog synthesizer. The record became the band's fourth consecutive album to reach number one on the US Billboard 200.
