Formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, American R&B and funk group The Gap Band had their first brush with fame in 1979 when their third self-titled LP broke into the Top 10 of the US R&B charts. After reaching Number 3 with 1979's The Gap Band II and scoring their first Number 1 album with 1980's The Gap Band III, the Wilson brothers struck while the iron was hot and released their overall sixth studio effort The Gap Band IV in 1982. The album was promoted through the singles "Early in the Morning" and "Outstanding," both of which went straight to Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart. Written by Raymond Calhoun, the latter is a sensuous R&B jam that quickly became one of the band's signature songs. In addition to topping the R&B charts in the United States, "Outstanding" reached Number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and even charted in the UK, where it peaked at Number 68. Since then, it has been sampled extensively on hip-hop songs, including Ice Cube's "True to the Game" (1992), The Braxton's "So Many Ways" (1996), and Tyler the Creator's "911/Mr. Lonely" (2017).
