"Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)" is a song by The Gap Band. The three brothers, Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson came up with the band name from the first letters of three streets (Greenwood, Archer, and Pine) in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. "Burn Rubber on Me" features the funky synth bass that became a big part of their sound through the 80s. Lyrically, the song is about being dumped by a woman who drives off while her lover is running an errand for her. "You told me to go up the block / To get you a strawberry pop / When I got back to the flat / You had burned rubber out the back." While definitely an unfortunate situation, it made for a great song that hit #1 on the Billboard R&B chart. Two years later, being dumped inspired another one of their biggest hits "You Dropped a Bomb on Me."
The backing track for "Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)"is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
