Believe it or not, the sentimental ballad "We've Only Just Begun" was specially written for a bank commercial. Composed by musician Roger Nichols and lyricist Paul Williams, the track made its debut in the winter of 1970 on an ad for The Crocker Bank, which was trying to appeal to young people at the time. The song caught the attention of Richard Carpenter, who then approached Williams in order to produce a complete version of the track. Released in the summer of 1970, "We've Only Just Begun" became the pair's second million-selling gold single after "(They Long to Be) Close to You," both included in their second studio album Close to You. The single reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, Number 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and helped them win two Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus in 1971. It was considered by both Richard and Karen Carpenter as the group's signature song.
