The Carpenters may not be the first group that springs to mind when you think of Christmas music, but this easy-listening offering takes the best bits of their soft-rock style and cooks up a festive delight. "The lights on my tree / I wish you could see / I wish it every day / The logs on the fire / Fill me with desire / To see you and to say," sings Karen Carpenter on a song that reminds of the joy of spending Christmas with a loved one. Released in November 1970, with music by Richard Carpenter and lyrics by Frank Pooler), "Merry Christmas Darling" gave The Carpenters a Number 1 on Billboard's Christmas singles chart in 1970, and again in 1971 and 1973. What's more, the siblings added a new remix of the song to their 1978 Christmas Portrait album, featuring freshly recorded vocals from Karen Carpenter. "Merry Christmas Darling" popped up in the second season of Glee decades later, via a cover by Lea Michele, and is featured on Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album.
