"Just a Friend" is a song by the hip hop artist Biz Markie. The New York native wrote, produced, and performed the track which became a crossover smash in 1989. The song was a humorous stand out from the harder edged rap hits of the day from artists like Public Enemy, The Ghetto Boys, and Ice T. Biz Markie raps a cautionary tale about dating a woman who cheated on him with guys she'd describe as just friends. The song contains one of the most unforgettable choruses in pop history as he sings "You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend / And you say he's just a friend" in an increasingly desperate and out of tune voice. Although “Just a Friend” was his only big hit, Biz Markie kept busy until his death in 2001.
