Temple of the Dog was put together by Chris Cornell in 1990 following the death of Andrew Wood, the lead singer of the bands Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun who died of a heroin overdose. This was a chance to pay tribute in the most poignant way. Temple of the Dog soon grew into a supergroup that included Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament on bass guitar (both ex-members of Mother Love Bone and later Pearl Jam), Mike McCready (later Pearl Jam) on lead guitar, and Matt Cameron (Soundgarden and later Pearl Jam) on drums. Eddie Vedder also contributed vocals. The group released its one and only self-titled album in April 1991 through A&M Records, wringing every drop of emotion from the 10 heart-wrenching tracks that included "Call Me a Dog," which Chris Cornell wrote as a candid ode to his then-wife Susan Silver. Temple of the Dog later reformed in 2016 to mark their 25th anniversary and embarked on the only tour of their career.
