With a career spanning six decades, a staggeringly vast amount of styles and genres, and an extremely eclectic list of career collaborators, you never quite know what to expect with new releases by Gordon Sumner (better known to the world as Sting). In the case of his driving 2021 single “Rushing Water,” the answer appears to be that he’s going back to basics. A new wave-tinged rock'n'roll song that harkens back to the days of The Police, the world-music influences that have defined Sting’s career are much more subdued on the track, instead replaced with a directness and urgency that clearly befit the legendary musician. “Rushing Water” was released as the first single off of Sting’s fifteenth solo album The Bridge, and it was written by Sting in collaboration with Martin Kierszenbaum and Gavin Brown. The album was produced by Sting as well as Martin Kierszenbaum and Maya Jane Coles and peaked at Number 15 on Billboard’s US Top Rock Albums chart.
