The opening and title track of Shirley Horn's elegant 1992 jazz opus, Here's to Life features a luxurious string section and orchestral arrangements courtesy of the legendary Johnny Mandel, who also had a hand in composing three songs on the LP. Written by Artie Butler and with famous lyrics by Phyllis Molinary, "Here's to Life" is a gorgeous slow ballad and world-class jazz standard that illuminates Shirley Horn's smoky voice. Viewed as the late jazz great's signature song, it has also been covered by countless other jazz and non-jazz artists over the years, including Barbra Streisand. Elsewhere on the album Here's to Life, for which Johnny Mandel received a Grammy Award (for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal), trumpeter Wynton Marsalis shows up on "A Time for Love" and "Quietly There" while Shirley Horn reworks "Hymne à l'amour," famously sung by Edith Piaf, for "If You Love Me."
