Late Texas-born scene-setter Selena remains one of the biggest Mexican-American artists to have ever lived. Lovingly dubbed "The Queen of Tejano" for her commitment to the hybrid Tex-Mex sound – that’s notably potent on her fourth studio album Amor Prohibido, (1994) – and universally famed for her unique fashion style, she was also nicknamed the "Tejano Madonna.” Weaving in strands of rock en español as well as reggae influences, cumbia candy "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" was released as the second single from Amor Prohibido and topped the US Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart where it remained for four consecutive weeks, making Selena’s second consecutive number one single. After she was tragically killed in a shooting on March 31, 1995 at the hands of Yolanda Saldívar, the song became interlinked with her fanbase who used "Bidi Bidi bom bom” as a way of denoting their affection for the beloved star.
