Four years before he stepped in to fill the void left by David Lee Roth as the lead singer of rock titans Van Halen, Sammy Hagar was steadily laying down roots of his own after cutting his teeth in Ronnie Montrose-founded hard rockers Montrose. Beginning with his 1976 debut Nine on a Ten Scale, he recorded five solo albums before arriving at 1982's Standing Hampton, which was not only his first album for Geffen after moving from Capitol Records but was also his first LP to score RIAA certification, eventually going platinum. What's more, five of Standing Hampton's singles made it onto the mainstream rock or pop singles charts, including this album opener "I'll Fall in Love Again", which reached Number 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, Number 43 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and was used on the soundtrack for 1985 coming-of-age US romantic drama film Vision Quest.
