"Goddess in my garden / Sister in my soul / Angel in my armor / Actress in my role," goes the zippy first verse of "Animate" by Rush, Geddy Lee's visceral vocals gushing over a propulsive backdrop of foot-stomping drums and gnarly guitar. "Animate" was recorded by the Canadian prog-rock giants in 1993 for their fifteenth studio album Counterparts. "Animate" rocketed to number 35 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in 1994, where it hung around for three weeks, but fared even better as a fan favorite, becoming one of te shiniest understated gems in the band's back catalog. Meanwhile, Counterparts made it to number two in the US, becoming one of the band's two biggest stateside success stories. The album went to number six in Canada and spawned a number-one Billboard Album Rock Tracks single in "Stick It Out" and a Grammy nomination for "Leave That Thing Alone" (Best Rock Instrumental Performance).
